How to Edit Videos and Reels with Claude

Claude does not edit video files by itself. You add a connector (an MCP server) from a video tool, and Claude plans and makes the edit through that tool while you watch the result. Pick the connector by the job: rough cuts of long recordings, clips from a long video, or a finished short-form reel from raw clips.

If the prompt does not appear, copy it into your chat.

Ask Claude to cut a video and, on its own, it can only write you a plan. It has no way to open your video file or export an edit of it. Add a connector from a video tool and Claude can do the edit: it reads your transcript, decides the cuts and tells the tool to make them. You watch the result in the tool’s player.

Plenty of people are trying this. On YouTube, searches for these phrases grew by 127% to 412% in a month, by vidIQ’s estimates.

This guide compares the five ways to edit video with Claude today, each described from the vendor’s own page as read on 25 October 2026. It shows how to add a connector, walks through a reel edit in EditorOP, and lists prompts that work and what to check after each. EditorOP is our product, so weigh that row with that in mind.

Can Claude edit video by itself?

No. Claude chat cannot open, cut or export a video you filmed. Anthropic’s upload page lists the file types chat accepts, and none of them is video or audio.

Claude can still plan an edit. Paste a transcript and it can find your strongest line, suggest what to cut or draft captions. To turn that plan into a finished file, it needs a tool that holds the footage and renders it.

What about Claude Motion?

Claude Motion makes animated graphics. It does not edit footage you filmed. Anthropic launched it in beta on 8 October 2026 for Team and Enterprise plans. Claude writes code that animates text, charts, shapes and images, and you export the result as an MP4. Anthropic’s help page says it uses no video generation model and does not create realistic footage or people. For animated explainers and titles, see the guide to Claude motion graphics.

What a connector is, in plain words

A connector links Claude to another app. Most video connectors use MCP, the Model Context Protocol, which its makers describe as an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems, like a USB-C port that many devices share. The video tool publishes a web address for its MCP server. You add that address to Claude once, sign in to the tool, and Claude gets a list of actions it can take there, such as “remove silences” or “change caption text”.

From then on, Claude works like an editor giving directions. It reads what the tool reports back (the transcript, the timeline, sometimes still frames), decides what to change and calls the right action. The tool does the cutting and rendering. That split explains most of what you will see: Claude can only do what the tool offers, and it can only see what the tool shows it.

How to choose

  • You filmed yourself talking and want a post-ready reel: EditorOP. The Claude video editor page lists everything it does in chat.
  • You recorded your screen or a talk: Tella’s connector, if the video lives in Tella.
  • You want to cut your own footage on a timeline you can also open by hand: invideo Editor.
  • You have a long podcast or webinar and want many short clips: OpusClip. Our OpusClip comparison explains how clipping differs from editing raw takes.
  • You code and want full control or batch jobs: Claude Code.

For AI editors with or without Claude, see the guide to AI video editors for short-form video.

How to add a custom connector in Claude

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan. Anthropic’s help center lists them for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users, and Free accounts are limited to one custom connector. These are the steps it gives for Pro and Max accounts:

  1. In Claude on the web or the desktop app, open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter a name and the tool’s connector URL, then click Continue.
  4. Review the sign-in settings Claude detects. Leave them as they are unless the tool’s own setup page says otherwise, then click Add.
  5. Sign in to the video tool when asked and approve access.
  6. In a chat, open the + menu at the lower left, go to Connectors and turn the tool on for that conversation.

The menu names come from Anthropic’s page on 25 October 2026 and can differ by app version. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds the connector for the organization first; members then find it under Customize, then Connectors, usually labelled Custom, and click Connect.

On a phone, Anthropic says installing connectors is still in beta and the web and desktop app remain the main path for custom connectors. A connector you add there shows up in the iOS and Android apps the next time you sign in.

Walkthrough: edit a reel with EditorOP in Claude

EditorOP turns raw talking-head clips into a finished vertical reel up to 90 seconds long. It picks the best take, cuts pauses, stumbles and filler, and adds captions, B-roll and motion graphics. In Claude, you direct the same edit by chatting. The prompts below are examples; Claude words its replies its own way.

1. Connect EditorOP

Add https://mcp.editorop.com/mcp as a custom connector with the steps above, sign in to EditorOP with Google and press Allow. The connector uses the credits on your EditorOP plan.

2. Start a project and upload every take

Make a reel from the clips I filmed today. Call the project Three habits.

Claude creates the project and replies with an upload link. Open it and add every take, false starts included: EditorOP uses the extra takes to choose the best version of each line. Your video files never go through the chat.

3. Optional: add a reel to copy

I want it edited like a reel I saved. Give me the link to add it.

Save the Reel, TikTok or Short from the app as a video file and upload it through that link. EditorOP does not fetch links, so a pasted URL will not work. The edit copies the reference’s layout, motion and kinds of graphics onto your clips. Ask “What will you copy from it?” and Claude can show you up to 8 stills from the reference with what EditorOP measured, at no credit cost.

4. Check the credits, then start the edit

How many credits will the edit take?

Claude reads the credits for each paid step and your balance from EditorOP, tells you the number and waits. Reply yes to start. To use a format, name it: Talking head, Tier list or Wall of text.

Where Claude shows the EditorOP card, the card follows the edit as it runs, then turns into a live editor you can play inside the chat. Otherwise, ask “How is the edit going?”

5. Change it by chatting

Once the reel is ready, Claude reads its timeline: each caption with its time, the footage segments, the graphics and where your face sits. Changes like these use no credits:

  • “Caption 4 says ‘tree habits’. Change it to ‘three habits’.”
  • “Use a bolder caption style.”
  • “Hide the footage segment where I say ‘sorry, let me start again’.” Cuts work on whole footage segments, so how precisely this one lands depends on where that segment starts and ends. Play the join afterwards.
  • “Swap the graphic at 12 seconds for a list that shows each habit as I say it.”
  • “Move the stat graphic one second later.”
  • “Undo that.”

EditorOP’s code fits each graphic so it never covers your face or the captions, and Claude’s reply says what it adjusted. If you changed the reel in the card yourself, Claude reads the timeline again before its next edit.

6. Preview, then export

Show me frames at 2, 15 and 40 seconds as the export will look.

Preview frames spend credits, so Claude shows the number and asks first. It can draw up to 6 frames at a time. Playing the reel in the card or the editor uses none.

Looks good. How do I export?

Claude gives you the editor link and the export credits. Open the link and press Export at the top right; the editor shows the credits again before it renders an HD file for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

An example EditorOP reel made from stock footage, not customer work. It was not made in the chat above; it shows the kind of finished reel the edit produces.

Prefer the full editor? The AI reel editor runs the same edit in your browser, with every caption, shot and graphic on a timeline.

The Claude Code route, for people who code

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. Its docs describe a tool that reads your files, edits them and runs commands, in a terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or a browser. Because it can run programs on your computer, it can run ffmpeg on a video file that chat cannot open. Every edit becomes a script you can rerun.

What it is good for

  • Batch jobs. Trim, caption or re-encode thirty files with one request.
  • Files you would rather keep on your own computer. Nothing has to be uploaded to a video service.
  • Motion graphics written as code. Remotion builds videos with React. Its Agent Skills, installed with npx skills add remotion-dev/skills, teach agents such as Claude Code how to work in a Remotion project.
  • Ready-made skills. Tella’s page points to open-source skills such as Cut Video, which run ffmpeg and Whisper on your machine to tighten a recording. MindStudio’s guide pairs Claude Code with HyperFrames, HeyGen’s open-source framework (Apache 2.0) that renders HTML to MP4, to add titles, lower thirds and subtitles across many files.

What it costs you in effort

  • Setup. LearnWithHasan’s beginner guide to its open-source YouTube editor puts setup at about 45 minutes: VS Code, Claude Code, Python, Node, ffmpeg, and API keys for transcription and optional voice cleanup. The author tested it on Windows 11 only.
  • A paid Claude plan. Anthropic’s help center says Pro and Max include Claude Code, and its usage counts against the same limits as chat.
  • No timeline. You judge the result by rendering it and watching. Claude does not see the output unless you have it pull still frames.
  • Licenses. Companies with more than 3 employees need a paid Remotion company license, per its license file.

If you would rather not maintain a pipeline, a connector needs only a URL and a sign-in.

Prompts that work, and what to check after each

Good editing prompts read like notes to a human editor: one change, the exact moment, and what to leave alone. Then check the result yourself, because Claude cannot always see what it changed.

Prompts by job, and what to check after each
JobPrompt that worksCheck after
Choose takes“Use the last complete take of each line, and keep my pause before the punchline.”Listen to every join. A cut on a breath or half a word sounds wrong even when the transcript looks right.
Cut dead air“Cut pauses longer than half a second, but leave the one after the question.”It still sounds like you talking. The guide to removing pauses and filler words shows how to judge each cut.
Fix a caption“Caption 6 says ‘tree’. Change only that word to ‘three’.”Names, numbers and words like “don’t”, checked against the audio.
Caption style“Make the captions bolder and all caps.”Read it on a phone with the app’s buttons showing. The Reels safe zone checker shows where they sit.
Add a graphic“When I list my three habits, show a list that adds each one as I say it.”Each item appears on its spoken word, and nothing covers your face.
Copy a reference“Read the reference reel and tell me what you will copy before you change anything.”The layout and pace match the reference; the words on screen are yours.
Clips from a long video“Find three moments under 60 seconds that make sense on their own. Tell me why you picked each.”The first line works for someone who never saw the full video.
Vertical version“Make a 9:16 version under 60 seconds that keeps my face in frame.”Face and text stay inside the safe zone on every shot.
Before a paid step“Tell me the credits before you spend anything, and wait for my yes.”The number matches what the tool shows before it renders.

A few habits help on every route:

  • Ask for one change per message, so you can undo it cleanly.
  • Point at the moment with seconds or words: “at 0:12”, “when I say ‘budget’”.
  • Ask Claude to read the current timeline before it edits, especially after you changed something by hand.
  • Ask for a short list of what changed after each round.
  • Keep a short brief (who the video is for, its length, its tone) and paste it into each new chat.

The worksheet below holds these prompts by job, with blank rows for your own.

What Claude still cannot do with video

Even with a good connector, these limits hold on every route.

  • Claude sees only what the tool shows it. It reads transcripts, timelines and metadata, and sees the picture only when the tool sends frames. Tella and EditorOP can send stills; OpusClip says its agent cannot see the picture. Watch the result before you post.
  • Video files do not go through chat. You upload in the tool’s own page. invideo also lets Claude Desktop upload local files to a project.
  • Claude can only do what the tool offers. If a tool has no blur action, Claude cannot blur. OpusClip cannot join two separate moments into one clip.
  • Transcripts mishear. Names, brands and numbers are where captions go wrong. Read every caption against the audio; captions people can actually read covers what else to check.
  • A new chat starts fresh. The project stays in the tool, but a new conversation does not carry over your earlier brief.
  • Two sets of limits. Claude’s plan has usage limits, and the video tool has its own plan or credits. Check both before a big batch.
  • The idea is still yours. Claude can suggest a stronger first line when you ask. No edit rescues a video that says nothing clear.

Questions people ask

Can Claude edit videos?

Not on its own. Claude chat cannot open or cut your video files, and Claude Motion makes animations from text, charts, shapes and images. With a connector from a video tool, it can make the edit through that tool: cut, caption, add graphics and prepare the export.

Can Claude watch a video?

Not directly. Claude works from what a tool reports back: the transcript, the timeline and sometimes still frames. Tella and EditorOP can send Claude stills so it can check the picture; OpusClip says its agent cannot see the picture.

Can I upload a video to Claude?

Anthropic’s upload page lists document and image types only, up to 500 MB per file and 20 files per chat. With a video connector, you upload the file to the video tool instead, usually through a link Claude gives you.

Which Claude plan do I need to edit video?

Anthropic lists custom connectors on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and Free accounts can add one custom connector. Claude Code comes with Pro and Max. The video tool has its own plans on top.

Can Claude edit Instagram Reels and TikToks?

Yes, through a tool that makes vertical video. EditorOP makes a reel up to 90 seconds from raw talking-head clips, OpusClip cuts vertical clips from a long video, and invideo can make a 9:16 version of a timeline.

Do I need Claude Code to edit video with Claude?

No. A connector works in Claude on the web or the desktop app with nothing to install. Claude Code suits people who want to run ffmpeg or Remotion on their own computer.

Can Claude add captions to a video?

Yes, through a connector: Tella, invideo, OpusClip and EditorOP all add captions, and Claude can fix a word the transcript got wrong. Check names and numbers yourself before you post.
