Instagram Hashtags in 2026: The 5-Hashtag Limit and What Still Works
Since 18 December 2025, Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a reel or post. Instagram says relevant hashtags help people interested in a topic find your post, so pick a few specific ones that describe the reel, and put the topic in your caption and on screen too.

Instagram now allows up to five hashtags on a reel or post. Many hashtag guides still say 30, the old limit. This guide quotes what Instagram has said since the change, from its own pages read on 25 October 2026. Anything from a news report or from our own judgment is labelled.
vidIQ estimates about 4,900 YouTube searches a month for “instagram hashtag research”, about 4,800 for “instagram hashtags” and about 3,400 for “how to add hashtags on instagram”. These are third-party estimates, checked on 25 October 2026.
What changed, and when
Instagram cut the hashtag limit on a reel or post from 30 to 5. On 18 December 2025 its official @creators account posted on Threads:
“New hashtag guidance: Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post.”
- hashtags allowed on an Instagram reel or post
- 5
- the day Instagram’s @creators account announced it
- 18 Dec 2025
- the old limit, still listed in Meta’s developer reference
- 30
The Help Center changed to match. A copy saved on 21 November 2025 says “You can use up to 30 tags on a post.” Copies saved on 16 January, 8 March, 22 April and 14 June 2026 say 5. The live page builds its text with JavaScript, so we read these saved copies.
Why Instagram says it changed
The slides in the post gave one reason. Social Media Today quoted them the same day: “We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.”
The slides also said Instagram “will gradually update” the limit, so some accounts may have kept 30 for a while. Social Samosa reported that the slides asked creators to avoid generic hashtags like #reels and #explore. We could not read the slides ourselves, so these lines come from those reports.
We found no longer explanation on Instagram’s blog or creator site. Social Media Today reports that Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, said in February 2025 that hashtags “don’t work” to increase reach. In May 2025 he called them “a great way to let people know what a post is about and connect posts.” We did not find the original clips.
Why some pages still say 30
Two things still say 30: guides written before December 2025, and Meta’s developer reference. The IG User Media reference, which scheduling tools build on to publish posts, says of the caption: “Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags.”
Instagram has not said whether posts published through the API follow the five-hashtag limit, and we have not tested it. Our judgment: write to five however you post, since that is Instagram’s limit in its own app and its advice favours fewer, targeted hashtags.
The caption character counter checks against five for this reason, and its notes name the API figure.
What Instagram says hashtags do now
Instagram describes hashtags as labels that help people find posts on a topic. What it has written about them keeps coming back to relevance.
- They put a post on a hashtag page. “If you have a public account and add hashtags to a post, the post will be visible on the corresponding hashtag page,” says the Help Center. Posts from private profiles don’t appear publicly there.
- Search matches them. Instagram’s 2021 search post says it tries to “match what you type with relevant usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places.” Meta’s search system card, updated June 2026, scores hashtags partly on “The similarity between the words used in your search and those in the hashtag.”
- Relevant ones can widen reach to the right people. The creator FAQ says: “Trending hashtags that are relevant to the topics in your reel can help you reach more people, who are interested in those topics specifically.”
- They feed trend detection. The same FAQ says: “We detect trends using factors like audio and hashtags.”
What Instagram says they don’t do
Irrelevant hashtags don’t help. The FAQ warns: “Don’t try to game the system by showing irrelevant hashtags, because engagement and consequently distribution may suffer if your content is shown to audiences who aren’t interested in your content.” The reach page adds that irrelevant hashtags “can cause your content’s reach to suffer in the long run.”
What happens if you add more than five
Instagram’s Help Center has one line on it, in the saved copy from 14 June 2026: “You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.” The 2025 version said the same with 30.
The page does not say what happens to a caption with a sixth hashtag, and we have not tested it in the app. Instagram’s slides said the change would roll out gradually, so what you see may differ by account. Read literally, the limit counts tags on the post, so moving extras to a comment is no way around it. That last point is our reading.
None of the pages we read mention a penalty for trying. Count before you post: paste the caption into the caption character counter, which flags a sixth hashtag.
How to add hashtags on Instagram
Type # and a word in the caption before you share. These steps come from the Help Center’s computer version, in the saved copy; buttons in the phone app may differ by app version.
- Take or upload a photo or video.
- Add a filter to a photo or trim a video if you like, then choose Next.
- Choose Write a caption... and type # followed by text or emoji, as in #flower.
- Choose Share.
To add a hashtag to a post you have already shared, the Help Center says to edit the caption or add the hashtag in a comment. It also says:
- Numbers work in hashtags. “However, spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.”
- “You can only tag your own posts.”
- Posts by people with private profiles “won’t appear publicly on hashtag pages.”
How to choose your five
Pick hashtags that say what this reel is about, and prefer specific ones over broad ones. That follows Instagram’s advice to use targeted hashtags that are relevant to the reel. The routine below is our judgment unless a step names a source.
- Write the reel’s topic in a few words. If you can’t, the hashtags won’t be clear either.
- List eight to ten candidates. Cover the topic, the problem it solves, and who it’s for. Instagram’s reach page says to “Play to your audience and their niche.”
- Mark each one broad or specific. Broad tags could sit on almost any post. Specific ones describe this reel.
- Cut what doesn’t describe the reel. That includes generic tags like #reels, which Social Samosa reported Instagram asked creators to avoid, and trending tags the reel isn’t about, which the creator FAQ warns against.
- Open each tag’s page. If the posts there look nothing like yours, the people browsing it may not want yours.
- Keep up to five, in the caption. Our rule of thumb is three specific tags for the topic and one or two for the niche.
| Candidate | What it describes | Broad or specific | Keep? |
|---|---|---|---|
| #windowlight | The method the reel teaches | Specific | Keep |
| #talkingheadvideo | The kind of video it helps with | Specific | Keep |
| #videolighting | The topic | Specific | Keep |
| #filmingtips | The wider topic | Broad | Keep |
| #contentcreatortips | Who it is for | Broad | Keep |
| #photography | A different craft | Broad | Drop: people browsing it want photos |
| #reels | The app itself | Broad | Drop: generic; Social Samosa reported Instagram asked creators to avoid tags like #reels |
| #viral | Nothing about the reel | Broad | Drop: says nothing about the topic |
Five survive: three describe this reel, and two name its wider topic and audience. #reels goes because Social Samosa reported Instagram asked creators to avoid generic tags like it. #photography and #viral fail our test: neither tells a viewer what the reel covers. The hashtag picker worksheet below has this example and blank rows for yours.
Put the topic in the caption and on screen too
Hashtags are one of several places your topic should appear. Instagram’s own tips name the caption, your name and your bio, and its Reels advice covers text on screen.
- Caption words. Instagram’s search post says: “Use relevant keywords and hashtags in captions.” The Help Center says people can search “using keywords to find photos and videos, accounts, hashtags and places.” Our judgment: open the caption with the topic in the words people would type.
- Name and bio. The same post says a handle or profile name “related to the content of your posts is your best bet for showing up in relevant searches”. It also asks for bio keywords about who you are.
- Text on screen. Instagram’s best practices say “Optimize for sound off (use text/closed captions)”, and the FAQ says to make the first 3 seconds engaging. Our judgment: put the topic in your first line on screen. The hook library has opening lines to adapt.
- Spoken words. “Instagram uses speech recognition technology to automatically create closed captions,” says its captions help page. Our judgment: say the topic out loud early, so viewers who read captions see it. The guide to adding captions to Instagram Reels covers both kinds.
Hashtags on TikTok and YouTube
YouTube publishes a ceiling of 60 hashtags, and TikTok states no limit on any page we could read. Both describe hashtags as a way to tie a video to its topic.
| Platform | Limit | Where they go | What the platform says they do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 on a reel or post, since 18 December 2025. Meta’s API reference still says 30. | Caption or comments. For search, Instagram says the caption. | Public posts show on the hashtag’s page. Search matches hashtags and captions. Relevant trending hashtags can help you reach people interested in the topic. | @creators postHelp Center (saved copy)Search post, 2021Creator FAQ | |
| YouTube, Shorts included | Above 60 on a video, YouTube ignores every hashtag on it. | Title or description. Up to 3 show by the title. | Connect a video with others that share the hashtag, and help viewers find related content through search. | YouTube Help |
| TikTok | None stated on a TikTok page we could read. | Caption. | Hashtags are among the content information that may shape the For You feed and search results. | TikTok Support (saved copy) |
YouTube’s help page is the most direct: “The more tags you add, the less relevant they become for viewers or listeners who are searching. If a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, we’ll ignore each hashtag on that content.” It warns that misleading or unrelated hashtags may get a video removed.
TikTok’s recommendation page lists “Sounds, hashtags, number of video views, and the country in which the content was published” among what may shape the For You feed. For search, it lists “How well the content matches your search inquiry, hashtags, and the sound used.” We read a copy saved on 20 June 2026, because tiktok.com does not load from our network in India.
Our judgment for posting one video to all three: write one caption with five hashtags, the strictest limit, and check it in the caption character counter. The guides to growing on Instagram Reels and on TikTok cover what each app says about reach.
Hashtag myths, checked against the sources
Each answer below comes from a source linked in the row. Where nothing we could read settles a claim, the verdict says unknown.
| What people say | What the sources say | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| “You can use up to 30 hashtags.” | Instagram allows up to 5 since 18 December 2025, and its Help Center now says 5. Only Meta’s API reference still says 30. | Out of date. |
| “Put hashtags in the first comment to hide them.” | The Help Center allows hashtags in comments, and says: “If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.” Instagram’s search post says “put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments.” | Comments are no way around the limit (our reading). For search, use the caption. |
| “More hashtags, more reach.” | Instagram’s slides, as Social Media Today quoted them, favour “fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags”. The creator FAQ warns that irrelevant hashtags can make distribution suffer. | False, by Instagram’s own account. |
| “#reels, #explore or #viral will get you onto Explore.” | Social Samosa reported that Instagram’s slides said to avoid generic hashtags like #reels and #explore. We found nothing from Instagram about #viral. | Instagram advises against generic tags, as reported. |
| “Instagram keeps a list of banned hashtags.” | Instagram’s search post says hashtags that break its Community Guidelines are removed, and it avoids showing hashtags that go against its Recommendations Guidelines in search. It publishes no list. | Some hashtags are hidden or removed. Which ones is unknown; lists online are not from Instagram. |
| “My hashtags got me shadowbanned.” | Instagram’s ranking post says Account Status shows whether your content can be recommended or appear in search, and lets you appeal. No page we read links hashtags to those limits. | Unknown. Check Account Status. |
| “Using the same hashtags on every post gets you penalised.” | No Instagram page we read says this, or the opposite. | Unknown. |
| “Hashtags don’t do anything any more.” | Public posts still show on hashtag pages, and search matches hashtags. The creator FAQ says relevant trending hashtags can help you reach interested people. Mosseri was reported saying in 2025 that hashtags “don’t work” to increase reach. | Mixed. They help people find a post on its topic; Instagram’s statements on reach differ. |
| “The five-hashtag limit covers Stories too.” | The announcement names reels and posts only. | Unknown for Stories. |
Where EditorOP fits
EditorOP works on the video, and you write the caption and hashtags in Instagram when you post. It turns your raw talking-head clips into a captioned vertical reel, so the topic you say is on screen as words too. See how the AI reel editor works.
Instagram hashtag questions
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?
Up to five on a reel or post. Instagram’s official @creators account announced the limit on 18 December 2025, replacing the old limit of 30. Meta’s developer reference for posting through its API still lists 30.
Why can I only use 5 hashtags on Instagram?
Instagram’s announcement slides, as Social Media Today quoted them, said that fewer, more targeted hashtags can improve both a post’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram. We found no longer explanation from Instagram.
Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
They still put public posts on hashtag pages, and Instagram search matches them. Instagram’s creator FAQ says relevant trending hashtags can help a reel reach people interested in that topic, and warns that irrelevant ones can hurt distribution.
What happens if you use more than 5 hashtags on Instagram?
Instagram’s Help Center says that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, your comment won’t post. It does not describe what happens to a longer caption, so count your hashtags before you share.
Should Instagram hashtags go in the caption or the comments?
The caption. Instagram’s guide to search says that for a post to be found in Search, you should put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments.
Are there banned hashtags on Instagram?
Instagram removes hashtags that break its Community Guidelines and keeps some out of search results, but it publishes no list. Lists of banned hashtags online come from third parties.
Why does my scheduling app still allow 30 hashtags?
Meta’s developer reference, which scheduling apps build on, still says a caption can hold 30 hashtags. Instagram has not said whether posts made that way follow the five-hashtag limit, so write to five either way.
How many hashtags should you use on YouTube Shorts and TikTok?
YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video with more than 60, and warns that the more you add, the less relevant they become. TikTok states no limit on a page we could read. Our suggestion for both is a few hashtags that describe the video.
