Reply to Comments With a Video on Reels, TikTok and Shorts

Instagram, TikTok and YouTube each let you answer a comment with a new short video that shows the comment as a sticker. Answer questions many viewers share, say the question in your first line, answer it fully, and point back to the original video.

A comment is a viewer telling you what they want to see next. Instagram, TikTok and YouTube all let you answer one with a new short video that shows the comment on screen. Done well, a reply answers the person who asked and everyone who wondered the same thing.

This guide quotes each app’s own help pages and announcements, read on 25 October 2026. TikTok’s pages come from saved Internet Archive copies, because tiktok.com does not load from our network in India. Advice that comes from us is labelled as our judgment.

What a video reply is

A video reply is a new short video that answers one comment and shows that comment on screen as a sticker. On each app the reply is a post of its own, and the sticker tells viewers what you are answering.

The apps added it one after another. TikTok’s newsroom published a tutorial on 18 June 2020: “On TikTok, you can now reply to any comment on your videos with a video response.” Instagram launched “Reels Visual Replies” on 10 December 2021, according to TechCrunch’s report of its tweet. YouTube announced comment stickers in Shorts on iOS on 15 September 2022, with Android “down the road”.

Few people search YouTube for the exact how-to. vidIQ puts both phrases we checked under 750 searches a month, and a broader phrase, “instagram reels comment”, at about 8,200. The format itself is far bigger than its searches: by June 2020, TikTok counted more than 1.8 billion views of #replytocomments.

Monthly YouTube searches for phrases about replying to comments
  • “instagram reels comment”about 8,200
  • “reply to comment with video”under 750

Third-party estimates from vidIQ, run 25 October 2026, for YouTube searches only. Bars marked “under 750” are drawn at the 750 ceiling; the real figure is lower.

Instagram, TikTok and YouTube compared

The three features work alike: you pick a comment, make a new video, and the comment rides along as a sticker. They differ on who can reply, whether the commenter hears about it, and what happens when the comment disappears.

Two differences matter most in practice. Instagram ties your reply to the comment: if the comment is deleted, so is your reply reel. And Instagram’s steps are the only ones of the three that mention picking a finished video from your camera roll, which matters if you edit replies before you post them.

How to reply with a reel on Instagram

On Instagram, tap Reply under a comment, then the camera icon. These steps are from the Help Center page for the app on Android, iPhone and iPad, in a copy saved on 14 June 2026. The live page builds its text with JavaScript, so we read the saved copy.

  1. Tap Reply below the comment you want to answer, then tap the camera icon on the left.
  2. Record your reel, or tap the gallery icon in the bottom left to pick a video from your gallery or camera roll. You can also tap Green Screen in the top right to record with a different background.
  3. Tap the comment sticker to change its background color, or tap and hold it to move it.
  4. Tap Next at the bottom and edit your reel.
  5. Tap Next in the bottom right, then tap Share.

The sticker carries “the comment, the commenter’s username and profile picture.” The Help Center adds: “The person who posted the comment will receive a notification that you replied to them.” Anyone can tap the commenter’s username at the bottom of your reel to see the comments on the original reel.

The wording on who can reply has changed. A 2022 copy of the page said that “after sharing a reel on Instagram, you can reply to comments people leave on your video”. The 2026 copy says: “Anyone can reply to comments people leave on public reels with a new reel.” The creator FAQ still describes it for “any comment left on one of your reels”. Menus can differ by app version and account.

How to reply with a video on TikTok

On TikTok, tap the comment, then the camera icon to the left of the comment box. That is how TikTok’s newsroom tutorial from 18 June 2020 describes it. We read a copy saved on 8 September 2025, because tiktok.com does not load from our network in India.

  1. Tap the comment you want to reply to with video.
  2. Press the camera icon to the left of the comment field to start recording.
  3. Once the video is recorded, attach the comment as a sticker, “so that viewers see the comment you’re referring to.”
  4. Post it. TikTok says the reply is “published in the comments section and posted as a new video to your page.”

The tutorial is more than six years old, and the app has changed many times since. We could not read a current TikTok Help Center page on video replies, so treat these steps as the shape of the flow, not exact button names. The tutorial doesn’t say whether the commenter is notified, or whether you can use a video from your gallery.

Its embedded examples show the kinds of comments creators answered: a request for a new ice cream topping, a question many viewers asked, and a request for a new edit. Each example’s caption includes “Reply to @” and the commenter’s username.

How to reply with a Short on YouTube

On YouTube, tap Reply on a comment, then the icon that opens the Shorts camera. YouTube Help gives two ways, in the YouTube app on Android, iPhone and iPad.

From the comment

  1. Go to the watch page of your Short or other video.
  2. Find the comment and tap Reply.
  3. Tap the icon to make a Short. The Shorts camera opens “with the selected comment displayed in a comment sticker.” Today’s help page shows this icon only as a picture; YouTube’s 2022 launch post called the step “Create a Short”.

From the Shorts camera

  1. Tap Create, then Create a Short.
  2. On the right menu, tap More, then Comments.
  3. Pick the comment sticker. To check which video the comment is on, tap More, then See video details.
  4. Record your video.

You can drag the sticker to move it or pinch to resize it. YouTube says reply Shorts “will let the commenter know and show up in the comment feed below the original comment.” A February 2023 update made the sticker tappable, “so viewers can watch the original Short or long-form video that someone commented on.”

The feature covers “comments posted on your channel”, on Shorts and on longer videos. You can also save comments for later: tap More on a comment, then Save. In the Shorts camera, saved comments sit under Comments, then See more.

Which comments to answer

Answer the comments many people share, not the loudest one. YouTube’s launch post suggested “answering their questions in your Shorts, taking content requests, reacting to comments in your videos”. TikTok’s tutorial notes that “sometimes users get tons of comments asking the same question about a video.”

Our judgment, in order of value:

  • Repeated questions. If five people ask the same thing, one reply answers all of them and the people who wondered without asking. Count how many asked before you film.
  • Fair objections and corrections. “This doesn’t work on Android” is a missing step. Thank the person, then show the fix.
  • Requests. “Do one on lighting at night” is a video idea with an audience already waiting.
  • Results. A viewer who tried your advice and reports back gives you a follow-up, if they agree to be shown.

Skip comments that only want a fight, comments that name someone else, and personal details a commenter may not want in front of a bigger audience. Don’t invite comments just to reply to them, either. Instagram’s creator page says it “will reduce visibility on any piece of content that’s using engagement bait.”

Tone and privacy

Answer the comment, and never mock the person who wrote it. A reply puts one viewer’s words, and often their name, in front of your whole audience. YouTube’s harassment policy bans content that encourages brigading, which it defines as “the coordinated abuse of an identifiable individual on or off YouTube.” A reply that makes fun of a commenter can start that without you asking for it. That last point is our reading.

What each app shows about the commenter

  • Instagram: the sticker shows the comment, the commenter’s username and profile picture.
  • TikTok: the sticker shows the comment. In the tutorial’s examples, the caption also names the commenter.
  • YouTube: the help page doesn’t say what the sticker shows. Check the preview before you post.

Our privacy rules

  • If the commenter is a private person and the comment is personal, ask them first with a text reply or a message.
  • If they say no, or might be under 18, make a regular video instead of a reply: read the question out yourself and leave their name off. YouTube’s policy names “a minor’s social media handle” among details third parties should not share.
  • Disagreeing is fine. Quote the point fairly, answer it, and say so if the commenter was right.

How to film and edit a reply

A good reply makes sense to someone who never saw the comment. The steps below are our judgment, backed by each app’s published advice where a source is named.

  1. Say the question first, in your own words. The sticker shows the comment, but someone scrolling may not read it. “Six of you asked if a phone mic is good enough” works as your opening line. Instagram’s creator FAQ asks for an engaging first 3 seconds; the hook library has openings to adapt.
  2. Answer fully, then stop. One question, one answer, with the answer before any backstory. Shorts can run up to 3 minutes, and Instagram recommends reels of 3 minutes or less to people who don’t follow you. Most answers need far less; the script timer shows how long yours runs.
  3. Show it if you can. If the question is “how”, show the screen, the setting or the object, then come back to your face.
  4. Point back to the original. On YouTube and Instagram the sticker or username already leads back. TikTok’s tutorial doesn’t say so, so name the original video out loud.
  5. Leave room for the sticker. Keep it off your face and your captions. The Reels safe zone checker shows where app buttons cover the frame.
  6. Add captions. Instagram’s best practices say “Optimize for sound off (use text/closed captions)”. The guide to adding captions to Instagram Reels covers both auto captions and captions in the video.

Film it like any talking-head video: lens at eye level, light in front of you and the microphone close. The talking head video guide covers the setup. A reply in your usual setup also looks like the rest of your feed.

Then decide where to edit. On Instagram you can edit the reply in any editor and pick the finished file from your camera roll in step 2 of the reply flow. On TikTok and YouTube, the pages we read describe recording in the app, so check whether your version lets you add a clip from your gallery.

How replies fit your content plan

Replies work best as a regular slot in your posting plan, fed by questions your audience already asked. The routine below is our judgment unless a step names a source.

  • Answer while the original is fresh. Instagram’s creator FAQ suggests liking or replying to comments on a reel “within the first 7 days”. Its engaging content page says the first few days.
  • Keep a queue. YouTube lets you save comments and reply to them later from the Shorts camera. For Instagram and TikTok, copy the best ones into the worksheet below with how many people asked.
  • Batch-film. Record three or four replies in one sitting with the same setup, then post them across the week.
  • Promote big questions. If a reply draws a new round of the same question, the topic may deserve a full video of its own.
  • Read the reply’s comments too. They are your next questions.

For what each app says about reach in general, see the guides to growing on Instagram Reels and growing on TikTok.

Video reply mistakes

Check your reply against this list before you post. Each item is our judgment unless it names an app.

  • Opening with “Thanks for the comment!” instead of the question.
  • Answering half the question, or two questions in one reply.
  • Mocking the commenter, or turning the reply into an argument with them.
  • Showing a private person’s name and picture on a personal comment without asking.
  • A sticker that covers your face or your captions.
  • Assuming viewers read the sticker, so the reply makes no sense without it.
  • Keeping no copy of the reply. On Instagram it is deleted if the comment is.
  • Picking only the praise, and never the questions or fair pushback.
  • Fishing for comments just to have something to answer. Instagram says it reduces the visibility of engagement bait.

The comment reply planner below turns this into a worksheet: the comment, how many people asked it, your first line, the points of your answer and how you point back to the original.

Where EditorOP fits

EditorOP edits the answer, and the app adds the comment. Upload your raw takes of the reply and EditorOP turns them into a captioned vertical video, so the question you say out loud also appears on screen as words. It does not add the comment sticker. On Instagram you can pick the exported video from your camera roll in the reply flow. On TikTok and YouTube, check whether your app lets you add a finished video to a reply. Video reply questions

How do you reply to a comment with a video on Instagram?

Tap Reply under the comment, then the camera icon on the left. Record a reel or pick a video from your camera roll, move the comment sticker where you want it, then tap Next and Share. Instagram notifies the person who wrote the comment.

How do you reply to a comment with a video on TikTok?

TikTok’s 2020 tutorial says to tap the comment, press the camera icon to the left of the comment field, and record. You can attach the comment as a sticker, and the reply is posted in the comments and as a new video on your page. Button names may have changed since.

How do you reply to a comment with a Short on YouTube?

In the YouTube app, tap Reply on a comment, then the icon that opens the Shorts camera with the comment as a sticker. You can also tap Create, then Create a Short, then More and Comments. It works on comments posted on your own channel.

Does the person get notified when you reply with a video?

On Instagram and YouTube, yes: both say the commenter is told. TikTok’s tutorial does not say either way.

Can you reply to a comment with a video you already made?

On Instagram, yes: the reply steps let you pick a video from your gallery or camera roll. The TikTok and YouTube pages we read only describe recording, so check your app.

Why can’t I reply to a comment with a reel?

Instagram’s Help Center describes replies on comments left on public reels. It also says no new reply reels can be made on a reel whose creator has set their account to private. Menus differ by app version too, so update the app if the camera icon is missing.

What happens to my reply if the comment is deleted?

On Instagram your reply reel is deleted too, and every reply reel goes if the original reel is deleted. YouTube and TikTok don’t say on the pages we read. Keep your own copy of each reply.

Can you reply with a video to comments on someone else’s reel?

Instagram’s Help Center now says anyone can reply to comments people leave on public reels with a new reel. YouTube limits it to comments posted on your own channel, and TikTok’s tutorial describes comments on your own videos.
